Ingredients for Herring Snacks
- Lightly salted herring medium size 1 piece
- Crimean onion medium size 1 piece
- Spice "pepper mixture" ground 1 gram
- Fresh dill greens 20 grams

Making herring snacks:
Step 1: prepare the cucumbers.
To begin with, carefully wash the cucumbers under running cold water and put it on a cutting board. Using a knife, cut off the ends and after - cut into thick circles not more 1 centimeter. Now lay the layers of cucumber circles in a sieve, and sprinkle each layer with a small amount of salt. Thanks to this process, enough vegetable juice will stand out, which we will pour, and the snack will subsequently not be watery. In addition, cucumbers will become much softer. We leave the vegetable to let the juice for about 1 hour.
After the allotted time, we lay out the cucumber circles on a cutting board and, using a knife, cut each into small cubes and immediately transfer it to a clean plate. If desired, cucumbers can be chopped on a coarse grater.
Step 2: prepare the herring.
We spread the herring on a cutting board and use a knife to cut off the head. After that, we clean the fish, cutting its abdomen from the head to the lower back fin. Now we make a shallow incision along the back and remove the skin with ease. We cut one half of the carcass, trying to cut it without touching the ridge. Then carefully remove the ridge with bones from the second herring fillet. And in the end, using kitchen tweezers, we take out bones from each part of the fish.
Grind each fillet into small cubes and transfer to a clean plate. Important: the size of the cubes should not be larger than the cucumber cubes.
Step 3: prepare the onion.
Using a knife, peel the onion from the husk and rinse well under running cold water. We spread the vegetable on a cutting board and finely chop into thin cubes. Then, chopped onion into a free plate.
Step 4: prepare the dill.
We wash the dill under running water and, brushing it off by weight from excess fluid, put it on a cutting board. Using a knife, finely chop the greens and transfer it to a clean plate.
Step 5: prepare a herring appetizer.
Put the chopped fillet, onion, finely chopped dill in a clean dry bowl, sprinkle everything with a mixture of peppers, then add chopped cucumbers to the bowl and pour the sour cream. Using a tablespoon, mix everything thoroughly until a homogeneous mass is formed. Everything, the snack is ready. If you want to serve a chilled snack to the table, then you can put it for 30-40 minutes in the refrigerator, only first you need to wrap the bowl with cling film so that the dish does not absorb foreign odors of other food.
Step 6: serve herring appetizer.
Before serving, a herring appetizer can be transferred either to a bowl and served in this form to the dining table.
Or spread a snack on rye or brown bread and serve it in the form of sandwiches. In any case, the herring appetizer turns out to be unforgettable, because salted fish, fresh cucumbers and sour cream give an original taste in combination. Especially if the supplement contains rye bread toasted in a pan without butter or in a toaster.
- Instead of Crimean onions, you can add green or onions to the appetizer. But such a variety of onions is not only much juicier, it is sweeter and not so sharp in taste.
- Pickled capers or onion rings can serve as a decoration for herring snacks.
